I am offering an original (not a reproduction) English Single Draw 16 Power Quartermaster’s Telescope. Spyglasses of this type were designed and built to be used by the quartermaster detailed to steer the ship. Based on the design, the materials used, and the quality it was likely built during the late 1800's in England. The scope measures 27½” closed, and 44½” fully extended (including the 3" Sunshade and 14" Draw Tube) and has a 2¼” aperture (object end). It appears that the entire scope is made of brass and the tapered main tube has a leather cover, which has stains but in good condition. The draw tube is signed in script as follows: "Spencer, Browning & Co, London, Improved." After some research I determined that the company was in business from1840 to 1870, so the "Improved" designation indicates this unit was probably built toward the end of their business operations. The view is reasonably clear and the overall cosmetic condition is nice but it has the following faults: The object lens has several chips around the edges which doesn't seem to affect the view. Also, the slide-out eyepiece protector is missing. There are numerous scrapes and dents in the draw tube, which feels firm and seems to adjust OK. This nautical artifact is a rare piece of International maritime history.
